Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the 5th of May. Aside from a holiday that celebrates Mexican heritage, Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Mexican armies unexpected and unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In the United States many confuse this holiday as the Mexican Independence day which is actually on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is heavily celebrated throughout the Southwest and the Phoenix area.
